About Maïté
Maïté Duval
Maïté was born in 1944 in Renazé, France. She studied literature at the University of Rouen and lived and worked in the Netherlands from 1968. Maïté died on 2 November 2019.
The sculptures and drawings of Maïté Duval are by turns tender, intimate and strong. With simple means and deep attention, she rises above figuration. Every element sounds in harmony and has its place within the larger form. The artist takes us into a world of robust form and movement; a world of earthly femininity. Her life
- 1944Born on 26 March in Renazé, France.
- Studies literature at the University of Rouen.
- 1968Moves to the Netherlands with her husband, the painter Thierry Rijkhart de Voogd.
- 1974Starts as a sculptor, without any art training. Auguste Rodin and Henry Moore are her great examples.
- 1978First solo exhibition, at Museum Henriëtte Polak in Zutphen.
- 1983Solo exhibition at the Singer Museum in Laren.
- 1999Opens her own sculpture garden and studio in Zutphen, open to visitors for twenty years.
- 2003Den Haag Sculptuur on the Lange Voorhout.
- 2017Marks forty years of sculpture with an exhibition in her own garden and studio.
- 2019Makes her last sculpture, Inspiratie. Maïté dies on 2 November in Zutphen.
- 2020Her archive, and that of Thierry, goes to the Erfgoedcentrum Zutphen.
- 2021The exhibition Maïté & Thierry at Museum Henriëtte Polak.
