Inspiration does not come from above
Over the past two years, photographer Jasja de Wit photographed the making of Inspiratie, Maïté's last sculpture. She wrote a lovely piece about it. Sit down for a while for her story and her beautiful photographs.
Their first meeting, in 2018, resulted in a wonderful photo series. "I gather all my courage," Jasja writes, "and ask the question I so want to ask: may I make a photo series of this for a personal project? My heart skips when she says yes. We agree that I may follow the whole road from wax model to patinated bronze. From the welding of an iron frame and the building up of a sculpture in clay, to the plaster positives and negatives, the casting of the bronze and the patina that is applied when the sculpture is finished. In the months that follow she calls regularly when she has taken another step. Sometimes the work goes faster than at other times. Sometimes she calls in help for the heavy work, because her health does not cooperate. She shares her worries about that openly. And still she works on."
