A tribute to Maïté Duval at Dat Bolwerck in Zutphen
Maïté Duval leaves behind a magnificent body of work: large bronze female figures, small études and drawings. On 19 December the municipality of Zutphen honours her memory with the municipal award de Meander, followed by an exhibition at Dat Bolwerck that runs until 24 January 2021.
The three children of Maïté Duval receive the Meander on 19 December from mayor Annemieke Vermeulen. The award goes to people who have rendered exceptional service of a very special kind to the community of Zutphen. From the 20th the public can enjoy the work in the three halls of Dat Bolwerck at Zaadmarkt 112. This house for contemporary art, philosophy and contemporary music in Zutphen is open from Thursday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm.
Maïté Duval, French by birth (Renazé 1944, Zutphen 2019), died on 2 November last year. She became known for a body of work entirely her own, of robust form, movement and femininity. Her figurative sculptures stand in public collections, are loved by collectors and are held in many museums. The title of this first posthumous exhibition, Inspiratie, is taken from the title of her last sculpture, which was still at the bronze foundry when she died. That work opens the exhibition at Dat Bolwerck and shows the essence of her artistry: always in search of new ideas and new forms of expression.
The exhibition gives a wide view of that search. From the sturdy, vital and imposing Indépendance of 1997 to the grieving memories of her late husband in Malade d’Amour (2002). From the many sensual drawings on show to the dozens of small bronzes in the display cases. All her work shares the same clear and warm forms, full of calm and serenity, and the bronze skin that invites touch and holds an intense tension within it. This is a world of earthly femininity, full of beauty in the everyday, and for that reason unforgettable even after her death.
