Sculptures by Maïté Duval go to Medisch Spectrum Twente
We are happy and proud. Medisch Spectrum Twente has four beautiful sculptures by Maïté Duval on long term loan.
The Familiefonds De Voogd-Duval, which looks after Maïté's artistic estate, and the hospital in Enschede signed a long term loan agreement, so that patients and visitors will be able to enjoy the art of the artist, who died in 2019, for many years to come.
It concerns four large bronze sculptures. With her strong hands in the heavy clay, the small Frenchwoman created a wonderful body of work. Sometimes restrained and tender, like the moving mother with her child in Douceur (2006). Sometimes immensely powerful, like Melancholie (1991), in which a young woman seems to fight her way upwards. A sculpture such as Horizon (pictured, 1998) is warm and intimate, while Arcade (2001) is full of life and movement, arching upwards with pleasure. Nearly all of Maïté Duval's sculptures speak of a woman who wanted to fight herself free.
And that is what she did. She freed herself not only from the limits of a simple, catholic childhood, but also from the false distinction between figurative and modern art. Both Auguste Rodin and Henry Moore were her great examples. Her work is never anecdotal; what marks it are clear and warm forms, volumes full of calm and serenity, and at the same time a bronze skin within which an intense tension unfolds.
